5 important Rules of pickleball volley

The five rules are that the ball must stay inbounds, 1 bounce per side, serving at the baseline, no surf in no volley zone, and the game must end at 11, 15, and 21 points. One minor rule is that the ball can’t bounce twice.

Let’s start with the rules in detail.

1: falling out of the bounds

Unlike paddle or racket sports the ball is not allowed to fall out of bounds in the pickleball. There are white lines available on either side of the court that dictates you where the ball can and cannot hit.

Once the ball hits the ground you will lose the serve and the ball will be given to the other team. This error is a great disadvantage for your game. As well as the remaining course of the game can also be altered because of this error.

Also there is good news that if you commit a mistake of hitting the ball and the ball goes out of bounds then you are not completely finished. There is a rule in pickleball that makes it unique and according to it the ball must bounce during the serve and the return of the serve, this takes away a bit of the benefit.

So if you have mistakenly hit your ball out of the serve then there is a chance of getting it back to the net while returning and this can help you in achieving good points.

2: proper serving regulations

There are few steps that must be followed when you start learning pickleball.

  • The server can be determined by a random number selection, flip of a coin, or some other method. But it is very fortunate that the server does not get much of the benefit and name is quite balanced for both parties.
  • The ball must be held below the waistline or underhand. It is necessary for starting the game. You need to keep one foot behind the baseline to make sure that the service is starting from the right distance.
  • All must be hit diagonal to the opposite site and if you are playing single then the ball can’t be directly hit across or it will be considered as a fault. The serve will start from the right side of the court and end in the left side.
  • If an incorrect serve is played then the next serve goes to the teammate if the game is Doubles or it will go to the opponent in singles.

3: Two Bounce rule

It is one of the most important rules in pickleball. Newcomers most of the time forget this rule especially when they get to serve. One of the easiest ways to give the ball back to your opponent is to let the ball Bounce twice. Once the ball bounces twice the serve at your side is over.

For that there must be at least one bounce per side, the serve and the return of the serve. Once the ball comes at your side you need to make sure that it bounces once before you hit. Similarly it is the unique rule that the serve must be bounced once in return of the serve. If you are getting a blast return from your opponent then you must let the ball bounce once before hitting it.

4: no touching in the no Volley zone

There is no volley zone for each team on both sides of the court. The no volley zone is inside the line box and 7 feet from the net. You can easily determine the lines because the whole area has highlighted regions and the regions are known as “kitchen line”.

While watching the game you must have heard people saying stay out of the kitchen this means that there is a section where you should not enter in the court unless the ball bounces this quadrant. Once the ball touches the no volley zone while using serve then you will lose your serve.

You must always serve beyond the Zone. Once you serve the ball, it is free to drop into the kitchen area and it is known as drop shot, also it is a signature shot in pickleball game.

5: Ending at 11, 15, 21 points

The Traditional game of pickleball always ends at 11 points. The winning Team should lead at least with two points. If your points are 11 and the opponent has 10 points the game will continue.

Sometimes the pickleball games might extend to 15 or can go all the way to 21. If the game is solo then the most common points are 11 and 15. And in Doubles 15 and 21 are the common points. You can always discuss your total with your team and your opponents.

On the basis of total points the rules are not much different. Once the game reaches 11 points that team switch is their sides as soon as they hit six points. But if the game reaches to 15 or 21 points the team will switch their sides on hitting 8 points.
